Septic Repair in the Flathead Valley
Septic problems rarely fix themselves, and most get more expensive the longer they wait. If your drains are slow, your yard smells, or an alarm is going off, call and we'll connect you with a local septic professional who can find the cause and fix it.
Common septic problems we get calls about
| What you notice | Common causes |
|---|---|
| Slow drains or gurgling in several fixtures | Full tank, clogged outlet or effluent filter, blocked line |
| Sewage odor in the yard or house | Full tank, damaged lid or riser, venting problem, failing drainfield |
| Wet, spongy or extra-green ground over the drainfield | Overloaded or failing drainfield, broken distribution line |
| High-water or pump alarm | Failed effluent pump, stuck float, tripped breaker, power outage |
| Backup into the lowest drain or toilet | Blocked main line, full tank, frozen line — treat as urgent |
| Frozen system in winter | Shallow or uninsulated lines, low use, compacted snow over lines |

Winter septic problems in the Flathead
Long, cold Flathead winters cause a lot of septic calls. Systems freeze most often when lines are shallow, snow cover is packed down by vehicles or foot traffic, or the home is used only occasionally. To reduce the risk:
- Keep vehicles, plows and snowmobiles off the tank and drainfield.
- Leave a layer of undisturbed snow or mulch over the system for insulation.
- Fix leaky fixtures — a slow trickle can freeze in the line.
- If you're leaving a cabin for the winter, ask a pro how to prepare the system.
Don't pour antifreeze, salt, or additives into the system to "thaw" it, and don't start a fire over the tank. Call a professional.
Repair costs
Small repairs like a baffle or filter can be a few hundred dollars; pumps and line repairs more; drainfield replacement can run into the many thousands. See our Flathead septic cost guide.
